2023 Export of Italian wine: according to the analysis by the Uiv-Ismea Observatory based on Istat data, the year witnessed a 1% decrease in export volumes, totaling 21.4 million hectoliters, and a 0.8% reduction in value, amounting to just under 7.8 billion euros.
Appellations Numbers
Consorzio Prosecco DOC (2023): the Prosecco DOC Consortium recorded the production of over 616 million bottles, equal to a value of around 2.8 billion euros (the denomination did not reach the record numbers of 2022, a golden year characterized by 638.5 million bottles produced for a value of over 3 billion euros). A decrease in volumes of approximately 22.5 million bottles compared to the previous year, this slight decrease is equal to approximately 3.5% overall of bottlings.
Consorzio Prosecco Conegliano Valdobbiadene DOCG (2023): the 2023 vintage closed with a 10% drop in the number of bottles, from 102.8 million in 2022 to 92.5 million in 2023.
Consorzio Prosecco Asolo DOCG (2023): 27 million bottles for the Asolo DOCG, +13% in the end of 2023.

Champagne (2023): 299 million bottles (-8.2% compared to 325 million bottles in 2022, but still in line with the 297 million bottles in 2019 pre-Covid). Export is almost 58% of the production. Sales is above 6 billion euros.
- Consorzio Vini Alto Adige: (2023): reported a turnover of 350 million euros, with production reaching 40 million bottles; the consortium encompasses 192 producers, covering 98% of the vineyard territory in the region.
- Consorzio Vini Alto Adige: (2022): 5600 ha, 45-50 million of bottles, 30% export.
- Consorzio Asti DOCG (2023): produced 103 million bottles, including 67 million of Asti Spumante DOCG (of which 18 million were exported to Russia) and 36 million of Moscato d’Asti DOCG (of which approximately 50% were exported to the USA).
- Chianti Classico DOCG (2022): 54% organic certificate
- Etna DOC (2023): experienced a resurgence over the past decade with a 70% increase in vineyard area and nearly a fourfold increase in bottling. The appellation covers 1550 ha, producing approximately 5.5 million bottles annually from 180 producers generating around 165 million euros. Land values range from €130,000 to €240,000 per hectare. Exports account for about 65% of sales. Market channels are 70% in Horeca, 20% in large retail chains, and 10% in e-commerce. In 2011, the DOC was revised to include 133 “Menzioni Geografiche Aggiuntive” (Additional Geographic Mentions). Now the appellation aims for DOCG status.
- Consorzio Franciacorta DOCG: (2023): 19.5 million bottles (-3.4% compared to 2022), because of lower yields and thus fewer bottles available in the market; but revenue was 476 million euros (+6.4% compared to 2022) thanks to an average shelf price that increased from 22.9 euros in 2022 to 24.4 euros in 2023.
- Cosorzio Gavi DOCG (2023): sold 14 million bottles, mirroring the production output and maintaining the trend of the previous two years, generating revenue of 70 million euros. Exports comprised 92% of total sales, with the United Kingdom being the largest market at 62%. Gavi DOCG is produced across 11 municipalities spanning Piedmont and Liguria.
- Consorzio Trento DOC: (2022): 67 sparkling wine houses, covering 1396 ha, approximately 13 million bottles recording a turnover of approximately 180 million euros.
- Consorzio Valpolicella DOC (2023): total production reached 61 million bottles (including 16 million Valpolicella, 31 million Valpolicella Ripasso, and 14 million Amarone and Recioto). The market is split with 40% domestic and 60% export. The consortium encompasses 8,617 ha, with 2,200 winemakers, 316 bottlers, and six cooperative wineries.

2023, TrentoDOC: Trentodoc sparkling wines consolidated a 3% growth in 2023 with a total turnover of 185 million euros; volumes contracted by 2%. Italy’s domestic market accounted for 85% of sales.

Poggio al Tesoro (Allegrini): 6.2 million euro, 70 hectares of vineyards, 540.000 bottles, 68% export (Switzerland 1st export market).
- Barbaresco DOCG (2023): closed 2023 with a bottling of approximately 4.3 million bottles.
- Barolo DOCG (2023): closed 2023 with a bottling of approximately 13.2 million bottles.
- Maremma Toscana DOC (2023): bottled 7 million bottles in 2023, marking a volume increase of 1.5% compared to 2022; however, sales declined by 13% over the same period. Vermentino is leading the way, reaching over 2.2 million bottles, representing 32% of the total DOC. The Consortium for the Protection of Wines of Maremma Toscana DOC, brings together 467 companies, including 350 winegrowers, 1 bottler and 116 winemakers that make wine from their own grapes.
- Pinot Grigio Delle Venezie DOC (2023): Pinot Grigio Delle Venezie is a significant appellation, encompassing 85% of Italy’s Pinot Grigio production and 43% of the world’s global output. Spanning approximately 25,000 hectares, this DOC produces 240 million bottles annually. It ranks second in volume, following the DOC Prosecco.
Winery Numbers
- Angelini (2023): Angelini Group reported a turnover of 30 million euros in 2023, marking a 2% increase from 2022.
- Angelini Wines & Estates (2022): Angelini Wines & Estates reported revenues of 29.7 million euros in 2022. The group, which includes Val di Suga, Tenuta Trerose, San Leonino, Cantina Puiatti, Bertani, Tenute San Sisto, and Fazi Battaglia, owns approximately 1,700 hectares of land, 460 of which are vineyards, producing around 4 million bottles annually.
- Il Borro (2023): generated 22 million euros in revenue, with approximately 50% coming from the hospitality sector, the remaining revenue is equally divided between catering and wine production. Il Borro Wines recorded over 5 million euros from approximately 350.000 bottles per year, all sold in the Horeca channel.
- Carpineto (2023): it generated 19 million euro in 2023, from its 5 estates in 5 different appellations (Chianti Classico, Nobile di Montepulciano, Brunello di Montalcino, Alto Valdarno and Maremma).
- Cavit (2023): this Trentino cooperative, encompassing 11 wineries and over five thousand winemakers, recorded a turnover of 267 million euros for the fiscal year ending May 31, 2023. Export is stable at 78%.
- Ambrogio and Giovanni Folonari Estates (2023): owning five estates in Tuscany (Nozzole in Chianti Classico, Cabreo Estates, La Fuga in Montalcino, Campo al Mare in Bolgheri, and Vigne a Porrona in Maremma Toscana), Ambrogio and Giovanni Folonari Estates recorded revenues of 10.3 million euros.
- Masi Agricola (2023): Masi Agricola reported 2023 revenues of 66.4 million euros, a decrease of 11% compared to 75 million euros in 2022.
- Mezzacorona (2024): Mezzacorona Group (which owns brands such as Rotari and Feudo Arancio) closed the 2023-24 financial year with a consolidated turnover of 212 million euros, down 2.5% on the 218 million of the previous year. Exports account for more than 80% of sales, with a presence in over 70 countries worldwide, the latest market is the United States, followed by Germany.
- Mezzacorona (2023): new turnover record for the Mezzacorona wine group which closes 2023 at almost 218 million euros. Exports are more than 80% of Mezzacorona’s sales and reach over 70 countries, the most strategic market is represented by the USA.
- Mionetto (2023): closed 2023 with a turnover of 153.4 million euros, up 10% on the previous year, with a total of 42.7 million bottles sold (the winery is part of the Henkell-Freixenet group).
- Montelvini (2023): in 2023 Montelvini confirms the numbers of the previous year with revenues of 31 million euros, domestic market accounts for 60% and exports for 40% of the overall turnover.
- Cantine Montresor (2023): Cantine Montresor achieved a turnover of 22 million euros in 2023, an increase from 19.3 million euros in 2022. The governance of this Valpolicella winery changed in 2019, with Terre Cevico acquiring a 75% stake and Cantine di Verona holding 25%.
- Nonino (2023): recorded revenues of around 18 million euros in 2023, experiencing a 6% decrease from 19.2 million euros in 2022. With its presence in 85 countries, over 50% of the company’s sales were generated from international markets.
- Nonino (2022): 19.2 million euros, 56% export to 87 countries.
- Pasqua Vini (2023): in 2023, Pasqua Vini achieved revenues of nearly 61 million euros, marking a 4.6% decline from the previous year, with 12.8 million bottles sold, of which 87% were for export and 13% for the domestic market.
- Cantine Pellegrino (2022): reported a turnover of 17 million euros, with 64% of sales in Italy (of which 50% were through “off-trade”) and 36% from exports.
- Ruffino (2023): part of the American Constellation Brands group, this historic Tuscan winery based in Pontassieve reported a turnover of 116 million euros in 2023, reflecting a decrease of 10% compared to the previous year.
- Santa Margherita Group (2023): closed the year with revenues of 255 million euros (a decrease of 2% from 2022), selling 27.3 million bottles; the exports accounting for 71.6% of sales.
- Santa Margherita Group (2022): reported revenues of 260 million euros, with exports accounting for 73% of sales. The USA was the primary market, followed by Italy, which contributed 71 million euros, representing 27% of the total turnover. The group includes Santa Margherita, Torresella, Kettmeier, Lamole di Lamole, Tenuta Sassoregale, and Cantina Mesa.
- Schenk Italia (2023): in 2023, Schenk Italia saw its turnover rise to over 141 million euros, a 2% growth from 2022. The company sold 57 million bottles, up from 55 million in the previous year. Export sales constituted approximately 70% of its total turnover. Schenk Italia’s portfolio includes wineries such as Bacio della Luna di Vidor (TV), Lunadoro di Montepulciano (SI), and Tenute Masso Antico (LE).
- Velenosi (2022): reported a turnover of 10.6 million euros, with 40% generated from exports.
- Zenato (2023): the turnover for the year 2023 is 44 million euros, reflecting a decrease from 46.2 million euros the previous year (2022). Export accounts for 75%.
- Zonin1821 (2023): established in 1821 and based in Gambellara (Vicenza), Zonin1821 reported revenues of approximately 195 million euros in 2023, showing a decrease of 2.3% compared to 199.5 million euros in 2022.
- Zonin1821 (2022): reported revenues of 199.5 million euros (with 85% attributed to export markets), and distributed 50 million bottles during the year.
2023 Consortium Oltrepo Pavese: 12,512 hectares, 7 appellations, for around 72 million bottles (date of 2021). The largest area planted with Pinot Noir (2,800 hectares) in Italy and the fourth in Europe (after Champagne, Burgundy, Languedoc), 75% of Italian Pinot Noir comes from here. The most produced wine is Bonarda (around 15 million bottles).

2022, ETNA DOC:
Etna DOC has officially started the process to obtain DOCG recognition for the entire Etna appellation.
In 2022, the claimed vineyard hectares were 1291, divided among 442 winemakers. Production was 43.6 thousand hectoliters for Etna DOC, equal to 5.8 million bottles.
2022, Col d’Orcia: la famiglia Marone Cinzano ne acquistò la proprietà nel 1973. Oggi la realtà toscana, certificata biologica dal 2010, conta 150 ettari vitati, di cui 106 ettari a Sangiovese Brunello. 2022: 7.7 million Euro, 58% fel fatturato viene da 66 paesi esteri (1st Svezia 14%, 2nd USA, 3rd Norvay).
2022 Argiano: 7.5 million euro, 58 hectares, 300.000 bottles of which 100.000 of Brunello. USA no1 market, Italy 15% of the market.
2023 Banfi: 61.2 million euros in revenues with 9.8 million bottles, 56% export and 44% domestic of which 70% Horeca.
2022 CAVIT: 267 million euro, 78% export, 1st export market being USA, Italy is the 2nd market (22%).
2022 Cantina Tollo: the cooperative winery from Abruzzo, sells 18 million bottles a year, has around 620 members and 2,500 hectares of cultivation, closed the 2022-23 fiscal year with a turnover of 49.9 million euros. Exports drove the revenues of the Tollo , reaching a share of 48% of the overall turnover. The remaining 52%, however, is attributable to Italian large-scale retail trade (34%) and Horeca (18%). The value of organic wine is also growing and currently represents 7% of total production.
2022 Felsina: 11 million euros, 60% export markets
2022-2023 Cantina Produttori di Valdobbiadene: turnover of 58.4 million euros (compared to 55 million the previous year) despite slightly decreasing volumes (-2 percent) mainly due to price list increases. In the 2023 harvest with a drop ranging from 15 to 20% of grapes harvested. The favourite sales channel remains large-scale retails, which accounts for 60% of the overall sales, while on-trade focuses mainly on Conegliano Valdobbiadene, Prosecco Superiore and Le Rive of which the company with the Val d’Oca brand is the largest producer overall.
2023 Cooperative Cantina Vignaioli Morellino di Scansano: 170 members, 700 hectares of vineyards, closed the period 2022-2023 with 15.5 million euro (+4%).
2023, Italian Wine Brands: A group listed on the Milan Stock Exchange, Italian Wine Brands reported consolidated revenues of 429.1 million euros in 2023, slightly down from 430.3 million euros in 2022, with exports accounting for 84% of the total revenue.
2023 Arnaldo Caprai: 2023 financial year closed at 8 million euros (+3.5% compared to 2022), from 200 hectares of vineyards managed, 110 of which are owned, resulting in 1 million bottles. The domestic market generates 70% and exports 30%.
