Italian vineyards cost more than a Caribbean island with prices rising from 1 million euros per hectare for Brunello and Barolo (Barolo premium “cru” prices reaching up to 2.5 million euros per hectare).
Figures higher than that these required to buy an island in the Bahamas, which can be bought for just over 2 million euros, as in the case of Lobster Island and just below the price of a resort-island in the Maldives (Soneva Jani), which also goes around 2.6 million euros.
For Brunello di Montalcino and Prosecco, the figures go up to one million euros per hectare, while it takes between 500 and 600 thousand euros to grab one hectare of Barbaresco, as well as Amarone, Bolgheri in Tuscany. Other DOC wines are even less expensive, from Franciacorta, which reaches up to 300 thousand euros, to Chianti at around 200 thousand euros. These very variable quotations depend of the type of wine produced, however the average value of the vineyards in Italy, according to a Coldiretti analysis of data Crea, is about 51 thousand euros per hectare, more than two and a half times the average of agricultural land.
